OBSERVATIONS OF MU PATIO

Little American flags all over the dirt/rocks –representing 9/11; a tragic event that affected many Americans 11 years ago.

Sitting under circular shady things—14 white big structures that allow people to sit outside & avoid the sun

Guy handing out flyers- offering jobs; he has earplugs on which doesn’t make him approachable, that being said he probably won’t get many participants.

There are a lot of the flyers he is giving out on the floor. Most people aren't interested but take the flyer anyways to just leave it on the ground. Why?!

Weird cactus, unlike the typical ones you normally see. It has about 20 saguaros and it’s short.

White railings all over the tables outside the memorial union

ASU tents promoting and selling things to students. They have huge speakers and a band playing, this attracted the attention of a lot of people because when people hear the noise from far away they wonder what is going on and they come close to the tents, where they are giving flyers and promoting events and clubs that are going on at ASU.

The band is playing and they hold the microphones right on their mouth and they are aligned like a triangle.

One of the singers is in the front and the other two are behind the one in the middle.

A is girl wearing a sweater in 100 degree weather. Either she’s from a place where the weather was way hotter than the weather in Arizona or she had nothing to wear that day!

Lady with an umbrella, this allows her to block the sun on such a hot day.

There is a truck in the middle of the sidewalk. This is odd and against the norms of our society. Cars shouldn’t be on the sidewalk.

Signs all over the place advertising different clubs and job opportunities. The signs have vibrant colors like red and yellow, which attract the attention of others.

Big umbrella on the tables giving shade to people eating and working; has white rope hanging from the top part

The same bike parking warning all over the place- they probably put so many to emphasize the importance of the announcement.

MEMORIAL UNION STRUCTURE- orange/red bricks with dark green cement walls & pillars holding the structure up.

Glass side walls with metal outlines & plain gray cement floor

Outside on the patio there are many tables and chairs. The tables can be moved which many people have done in order to sit and socialize with a big group of people.

Some people are socializing, some are eating, some are by themselves on their computers, and some are eating by themselves.

The main function for this area is for socialization

Girl walking around with green hair, could represent a unique personality since it is not very normal to see this.

Girl wearing no shoes, this is definitely not normal, everyone is used to seeing people wearing shoes. It is a normal thing to do, yet she’s not wearing any.

Middle Eastern girl covered from head to toe. This is a cultural and religious tradition for Middle Eastern women to do.

A guy is smoking by himself at a table with his feet on the chair. He finishes his cigarette and throws it on the floor. I look down and I see so many more of these cigarette buds. This shows how people don’t care about their environment and their school. Why throw it on the ground when there are plenty of places to throw them away?

On my right side there is an abstract looking structure. It looks like it’s made of metal but it is oxidized. The top part consists of two arches (half circles) stacked on top of each other. People can rotate this figure and it will continue to rotate for a long time. Why was this created this way? Is it supposed to be oxidized?

The purpose of the Memorial Union is to bring students, teachers, and possibly families and have a place for them to hang out, eat, and enjoy each other’s company. The MU in a way brings people together and allows them to interact outside of their dorms and classrooms.

  1. In your observation of the Memorial Union patio, your strongest point was the description of the activities that took place when you were there. I admire the detail descriptions of what each individual was doing based on your observation. Noting movement and activities will give you a stronger understanding of the area. Your description of the movement that took place reminds me of Mary Austin’s description in The Mesa Trail, “There is always a little wind in the mesa, a sliding current of cooler air going down the face of the mountain of momentum, but no to disturb the silence of great space.”
As your observation on movement in the area was fantastic, I do have some tips that may make your observation stronger. For starters, I noticed there was more opinion than there was observation of other senses such as touch and smell. It may help your observation become stronger if you use more adjectives that appeal to more senses other than sight. By using as many senses as possible, there will be a better understanding of your notes; ultimately allowing you to have a strong memory of the place. The more detail you have, the easier it will be to write about the place of interest.
